In Shakespeare's Macbeth, toward the end of the play, the deplorable King realizes that he has cavorted with Evil, bargained with witches, betrayed his loyal friends, slaughtered innocent children, decimated his country, and is despised by most. He says that he is in blood so deep [deep shit] that he might as well go all the way in. He barricades himself in his castle, refuses to concede to the new power structure and will not relinquish his authority. Macbeth is a broken man by Act 5. His arrogance, paranoia, and instability lead to his downfall. Finally, he loses his mind and his head because he has shown his kingdom his true wickedness. (A wee, simple paraphrase by Mr. Robinson, the old English teacher and Shakespearean instructor.) -- Just sayin' .
